By 5 Towns Central Staff

BELLEVILLE, Ont. (Sep. 21, 2026) — An armed encounter outside a shul on Yom Kippur evening resulted in serious injuries to both a veteran law enforcement officer and an armed assailant.

The incident took place around 7 p.m. near the Sons of Jacob Synagogue as congregants gathered inside for Yom Kippur davening. An armed individual arrived in the area with a firearm and opened fire on an officer stationed nearby in a security capacity. The officer returned fire despite sustaining critical injuries, and an additional responding officer also engaged the assailant during the confrontation.

Between 20 and 30 shots were exchanged in the residential neighborhood. Multiple bullets struck neighboring structures and parked vehicles, while some projectiles hit the Shul itself. Remarkably, no worshippers or neighborhood residents suffered physical harm.

The wounded officer, Constable Jeff Smith, a 13-year veteran of the department, was transported to an intensive care unit with life-threatening wounds but has since shown encouraging signs of stabilization. The suspect, identified as 29-year-old Sean Ward, was also struck during the gunfire and remains hospitalized in critical condition.

Specialized provincial investigators have secured the vicinity to conduct an exhaustive forensic review, collecting evidence and analyzing dashcam and body camera recordings. Law enforcement leaders have reassured the broader community that the immediate danger has passed and that protective patrols have been stepped up around local religious institutions.

Government leaders across the country expressed horror over the violence, emphasizing that religious communities must always be able to practice their faith safely and free from intimidation. The investigation remains active as authorities examine the sequence of events leading up to the encounter.
