PM Netanyahu Set for Brief New York Visit to Address UN General Assembly
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is scheduled to arrive in New York on Wednesday ahead of his appearance at the United Nations General Assembly, where he is expected to deliver his address Thursday afternoon before returning to Israel later that evening. Israeli officials have described the trip as a short, tightly scheduled visit, with Netanyahu not planning to remain overnight.
The abbreviated itinerary comes as New York prepares for heightened security and multiple demonstrations surrounding the UN gathering. The NYPD has said it expects protests throughout the week and is coordinating with federal agencies and organizers to secure the city and visiting delegations.
Netanyahu’s aircraft is expected to use Newark rather than JFK, according to reports. The decision comes amid heightened security considerations surrounding his visit and previous statements by Mayor Zohran Mamdani regarding Netanyahu’s potential arrest. Mamdani has acknowledged that New York City does not have the authority to independently enforce the International Criminal Court’s warrant against the Israeli prime minister.
Netanyahu’s planned stop in Texas to meet Elon Musk was also canceled, with Israeli officials citing logistical and coordination difficulties.
No meeting between Netanyahu and President Donald Trump has been announced for the visit. Netanyahu is expected to hold discussions with other officials and foreign leaders while in New York, with Secretary of State Marco Rubio among those he may meet.
The prime minister’s UN speech is expected to focus heavily on Iran, Israel’s security concerns and the ongoing regional conflict. Netanyahu has said he intends to use the international platform to present Israel’s position and respond to criticism of the country.
Israeli officials are also preparing for possible disruptions inside the General Assembly hall. Netanyahu’s address last year was met by a significant walkout, and Israeli Ambassador to the UN Danny Danon has said he expects similar scenes this year.
