Trump & Mamdani Meet at Gracie Mansion to Discuss Housing, Immigration and NYC Priorities
President Donald Trump met with New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani at Gracie Mansion on Monday during the president’s visit to New York for the United Nations General Assembly. The meeting marked the third time the two have met, following two earlier discussions at the White House.
The hour-long meeting focused on several issues affecting New York City, including housing, affordability, immigration and federal support for local initiatives. Mamdani said he emphasized his willingness to work with anyone who can help address the city’s cost-of-living challenges, regardless of political differences.
One of the central topics was the long-discussed redevelopment of Sunnyside Yard in Queens. The proposal envisions building approximately 12,000 homes and creating 30,000 jobs on and around the 190-acre rail yard. Mamdani said City Hall and White House officials will begin a new round of discussions about the project, which would require significant federal involvement. Trump said the proposal would need federal approvals and likely federal funding, but did not commit to a specific amount.
Immigration was another point of discussion, particularly the Trump administration’s termination of Temporary Protected Status for Haitian immigrants. Mamdani said he raised the issue directly with the president and stressed the importance of TPS to Haitian New Yorkers, their families and local institutions. Trump did not indicate that he would reverse the policy.
The two also spoke publicly about their political differences, while maintaining that they could continue working together on areas of shared interest. Trump offered praise for Mamdani during the appearance, saying the mayor has “great potential” and is “off to a start.”
Trump also reflected on his familiarity with Gracie Mansion and recalled encouraging Mamdani to move into the official mayoral residence after taking office. The visit was Trump’s first as president to the historic Manhattan residence.

Notice how Zohran Mamdani looks FURIOUS and starts blinking excessively when Trump says that Iran will never have nuclear weapons.
Just a reminder that Mamdani is a Twelver Shia Muslim, the exact same sect as the Islamic regime, Hezbollah and Houthis. pic.twitter.com/34RJFMF7Dx
