Trump Makes Historic Visit to Gracie Mansion, Meets With Mayor Mamdani Ahead of UN General Assembly

President Donald Trump made a historic visit to Gracie Mansion on Monday afternoon, meeting with New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani ahead of his address to the United Nations General Assembly. The visit marked the first time a sitting U.S. president had visited the mayor’s official residence in 45 years, since President Ronald Reagan met with then-Mayor Ed Koch in 1981.

The hourlong meeting marked another chapter in the unusual relationship between the Republican president and the democratic socialist mayor, who have sharply different political views but have continued working together on issues affecting New York City. The two previously met at the White House in November and again in February, making Monday’s meeting their third in-person encounter and the first time Trump visited Mamdani in New York.

Speaking to reporters following the meeting, Mamdani emphasized his willingness to work with anyone, regardless of political affiliation or disagreements, who is prepared to help New Yorkers. Their discussions included the city’s affordability crisis, a proposed major housing development at Sunnyside Yard in Queens, and immigration issues affecting New Yorkers. Trump expressed interest in the housing project, which would require federal approvals and potentially federal funding.

Trump also offered warm words for Mamdani, recalling his many previous visits to Gracie Mansion and his experiences with past New York City mayors. The president said he hoped Mamdani would become a great mayor, adding that he had “great potential.” Trump stressed that despite their political differences, he wanted what was best for New York City and the country.

The joint appearance also drew attention amid an ongoing dispute over the White House’s decision to ban CNN, MS NOW, and Politico. Asked about the restrictions, Mamdani said he had informed Trump that all members of the press would be welcome at Gracie Mansion, regardless of their coverage or criticism. Trump defended his decision and dismissed reports that television networks would boycott him, joking, “They never boycott me,” as he pointed toward the reporters gathered in front of him.

The meeting came as Trump prepared to address world leaders at the United Nations General Assembly on Tuesday. Despite their continued disagreements over issues including immigration and taxation, both leaders indicated that they intended to continue their discussions on housing and other matters affecting New York City.
