Report: Trump told Mamdani ‘I’ll Look After You, You Look After New Yorkers’

NEW YORK (AP) – President Donald Trump told New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani he would like him to visit the White House to “see how I work” after the two met Monday at Gracie Mansion, according to the New York Post.

The offer was captured in a video of the meeting and interpreted by lip reader Jeremy Freeman, who told the Post that Trump also told Mamdani, “I’ll look after you, you look after the New Yorkers.”

“And we can both make it work,” Trump said, according to Freeman. “I wanna support you, help me. Come with me to the White House — see how I work.”

The 90-minute meeting between Trump and Mamdani focused on immigration and a proposed Queens housing project for which the mayor is seeking federal assistance, the Post reported. Trump also spoke about his memories of living at Gracie Mansion.

The meeting marked another public interaction between the president and the mayor, who have previously clashed politically but have developed a working relationship following a White House meeting in February.

Trump told reporters after that earlier meeting that he considered Mamdani a “nice guy,” according to the Post.

Mamdani later described Monday’s meeting as productive.

Trump again offered positive comments about the mayor while speaking with reporters, saying he had seen many New York City mayors over the years, some of whom he considered successful and others less so.

“So, hopefully you’re going to be a great one,” Trump told Mamdani, according to the Post. “I’ll be able to say you’re going to be a great one, and you’re off to a good start.”

The White House did not immediately respond to the Post’s request for comment Tuesday.
