Speed Cameras Now Issuing Tickets at Verrazzano and Battery Tunnel Construction Zones
By Y.M. Lowy
When traveling through construction zones on the Verrazzano Bridge and Hugh L. Carey Tunnel, watch your speed because MTA speed cameras are now issuing tickets to drivers who exceed the posted speed limit by more than 10 mph.
The cameras began issuing violations today after the MTA spent the past several months warning drivers. Since June 30, more than 15,780 warning notices have been issued to motorists caught speeding through construction zones.
The cameras will operate during work hours and will be placed in construction zones with signs warning drivers that speed cameras are in use.
The first violation carries a $50 fine. A second violation within 18 months carries a $75 fine, while additional violations during that period carry a $100 fine. No points will be added to a driver’s license because the violations are considered non-moving infractions.
The MTA operates several other bridges and tunnels where the cameras may also be used, including the Bronx-Whitestone Bridge, Cross Bay Veterans Memorial Bridge, Henry Hudson Bridge, Marine Parkway-Gil Hodges Memorial Bridge, Queens-Midtown Tunnel, Robert F. Kennedy Bridge and Throgs Neck Bridge.
