New Jersey Issues Record $1.07 Million Fine Against Vineland Data Center
New Jersey officials have issued a $1.07 million fine against a data center in Vineland for violations of the state’s Air Pollution Control Act, marking what the Sherrill administration says is the largest enforcement action against a data center in state history.
The New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection issued the penalty against Data One following a July 29 inspection of its Vineland facility. According to the state, inspectors found 62 large natural-gas generators that had been installed and were operating without required DEP permits.
Governor Mikie Sherrill said the enforcement action reflects her administration’s push to hold data centers accountable for their environmental and energy impacts.
“We are putting power in the hands of the people and ensuring this industry works for us, on our terms – not theirs,” Sherrill said, adding that data centers will be expected to pay their share of energy costs, account for water and energy use, protect the environment and invest in local communities.
The DEP issued an Administrative Order and Notice of Civil Administrative Penalty Assessment against the company over the violations.
