NJ American Water Lead Service Line Canvassing Continues This Week in Lakewood
New Jersey American Water’s Lead Service Line Replacement Program is continuing in Lakewood this week, with authorized crews currently canvassing homes in census tracts 7155.01, 7155.02 and 7155.03, including areas in and around Central Avenue and Hope Chapel Road.
The canvassing is being conducted by CDM Smith, a qualified contractor for New Jersey American Water, as part of the utility’s ongoing effort to identify and replace lead and galvanized steel service lines.
The program follows a 2021 New Jersey law requiring water providers to identify and replace lead and galvanized steel service lines by 2031. Service lines are the pipes connecting water mains in the street to individual homes and buildings and include both utility-owned and property-owner portions.
Residents can identify their own service line and submit photos to New Jersey American Water or schedule a free in-person inspection. Inspections generally take about 15 minutes.
Authorized canvassers may also visit designated properties directly. Crews will wear clearly marked high-visibility vests displaying New Jersey American Water and CDM Smith logos and will carry official identification. Residents should be aware that canvassers will never request sensitive personal or financial information or documentation.
All canvassing, inspections and replacement work are being performed by New Jersey American Water or its authorized contractors, not Lakewood Township or another government agency. The effort is being coordinated with Lakewood Township for public awareness and safety.
Residents may continue using their water normally. According to New Jersey American Water, its water continues to meet state and federal water-quality standards, including standards for lead.
Additional information, including an interactive service-line inventory map and tools for identifying service-line materials, is available through New Jersey American Water’s Lead Service Line Replacement Program. Residents with additional questions can contact the utility’s Lead Team at [email protected] or CDM Smith at 732-590-4700.
