Iran Carries Out New Strike in Iraq’s Kurdistan Region as US Negotiations Continue
(Jerusalem Post) Iran launched another attack against Kurdish targets in Iraq’s Kurdistan Region on Thursday, September 24, according to a report by The Jerusalem Post. The strike came one day after Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian addressed the United Nations General Assembly, where Iran signaled that it would not yield to pressure from the United States.
Iran has carried out more than 1,000 drone and missile attacks against the region since February, according to the report. The strikes have targeted Kurdish opposition groups as well as US diplomatic facilities and other locations.
The attacks appear intended to pressure Kurdish organizations while demonstrating Iran’s ability to conduct operations beyond its borders. Kurdish Rudaw Media Network reported that the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps launched three drones toward a village near Soran in Erbil province early Thursday, injuring one member of the Peshmerga.
The targeted location was reportedly associated with the Kurdistan Democratic Party of Iran (KDPI), a Kurdish opposition organization. The strike occurred only hours after Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi participated in indirect discussions with US representatives concerning a possible end to the war.
The latest attack also comes amid broader developments involving Iraq’s Kurdish region. The operation was reported shortly after the anniversary of the 2017 Kurdish independence referendum, when voters in northern Iraq overwhelmingly supported independence. The referendum was followed by Iraqi military action around Kirkuk and attacks by Iranian-backed militias against Kurdish forces.
Rudaw reported that three drones struck a location in the village of Dilizian at approximately 2 a.m. Thursday, with the weapons reportedly launched from the Iranian side of the border near the Haji Omaran crossing. The KDPI separately confirmed that one of its facilities near Soran had been attacked.
The incident also follows efforts to unify the Peshmerga, the armed forces of the Kurdistan Region. Kurdish authorities have sought closer security cooperation with Baghdad and improved air-defense capabilities as they face continued threats from neighboring Iran.
The latest strike underscores the tension between Iran’s military activity and ongoing diplomatic efforts. The attack occurred while Iranian and US representatives were engaged in discussions, raising questions about whether Tehran intends to maintain pressure on Kurdish groups even if negotiations produce an agreement.
