Hostile Protests Outside UN Feature Netanyahu Effigy in Noose as Demonstrators Demand End to Israel
NEW YORK — Anti-Zionist demonstrators gathered outside the United Nations in New York on Thursday as Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu addressed the UN General Assembly. During the protests, demonstrators displayed an effigy of Netanyahu with a noose around its neck, compared him to Satan and called for Israel’s destruction.
As Netanyahu spoke inside the UN complex, several dozen protesters assembled at a nearby street corner.
The demonstrators displayed an effigy resembling Netanyahu that was dressed in a striped prison uniform. A name tag attached to the figure identified it as “Satan,” while a noose was placed around its neck.
“Netanyahu in a bunker, we will put you six feet under,” they chanted.
Some protesters also repeatedly shouted, “Kill him.”
Several demonstrators wore paper bags over their heads, cutting holes for their eyes. Images depicting Israeli and American leaders, along with representations of nooses, were attached to the bags.
The crowd repeatedly chanted, “Globalize the intifada,” “From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free.”
A plastic pig’s head marked “Bibi,” a nickname commonly used for Netanyahu, was displayed on a metal pole.
A Jewish man who entered the protest while recording himself was confronted by demonstrators chanting, “Death to the IDF.”
The protesters referred to counter-demonstrators as “Zios,” a derogatory term that was popularized by white supremacist circles.
“I know a Zio when I see one. No one likes Zios. No one likes Nazis. Zios are Nazis,” one of the protesters shouted.
The activists also displayed baby dolls wrapped in sheets marked with what appeared to be blood. Nearby signs declared, “Israel is a child killer regime,” and “Baby killers.”
Later in the day, thousands of people participated in a separate demonstration organized by the Palestinian Youth Movement. The group initially gathered at Bryant Park in Manhattan before marching toward Dag Hammarskjöld Plaza near the United Nations.
The event became the largest protest in New York on Thursday, following a number of demonstrations organized by Jewish groups.
Participants chanted, “Brick by brick, wall by wall, Zionism will fall,” “End the settler Zionist state,” and “Israel no more.”
One speaker addressing the crowd declared, “Zionism in all its forms will never be welcome in New York City.”
Signs carried by protesters included messages reading, “Zionism is terrorism,” and “Israel has no soul.”
One demonstrator displayed a flag associated with the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine, which is designated as a terrorist organization by the United States.
Other protesters carried an enormous cardboard image of Netanyahu. The depiction showed his face covered in red and blood appearing to drip from his extended hands.
The demonstrations included participants associated with communist and socialist organizations, CodePink, the Democratic Socialists of America and the anti-Zionist group Jewish Voice for Peace.
Despite the inflammatory rhetoric and imagery displayed at the demonstrations, there was no violence reported at either event.
At both protests, demonstrators repeatedly invoked Satan when referring to Netanyahu and other Israeli officials. Some carried signs depicting Netanyahu with horns, while others referred to him as “Satanyahu.”
Additional signs compared Israel to Nazi Germany or referenced alleged connections involving Jeffrey Epstein.
