Maine Man Indicted On Attempted Murder Charges In South Toms River Officer-Involved Shooting
A Maine man has been indicted on three counts of attempted murder and multiple other charges stemming from an April incident in South Toms River that ended with police shooting and wounding him.
Ocean County Prosecutor Bradley D. Billhimer announced that a Grand Jury indicted 37-year-old Brian Lanzim, of Bangor, Maine, on September 23 on three counts of Attempted Murder, two counts each of Possession of a Weapon for an Unlawful Purpose and Unlawful Possession of a Weapon, as well as Home Invasion Burglary, Unlawful Use of Body Armor and two counts of Terroristic Threats.
Authorities say South Toms River Police responded to a residence on Dover Road on April 29 after receiving information that Lanzim had made threats against people living at the home and was traveling from Maine while armed.
While officers were in the area, prosecutors say Lanzim drove his vehicle across the front lawn toward an officer, forcing the officer to take cover behind a fence. Lanzim then allegedly exited the vehicle and attempted to enter a locked door of the residence.
Police confronted Lanzim, who authorities say was wearing a bullet-resistant vest and carrying a handgun. After he allegedly failed to comply with repeated commands, a South Toms River officer fired his service weapon, hitting Lanzim in the pelvis and hand.
Officers disarmed Lanzim, provided medical aid and had him transported to Jersey Shore University Medical Center for treatment. Investigators later reported finding a loaded rifle and large-capacity ammunition magazines inside his vehicle.
Following his release from the hospital, Lanzim was taken to the Ocean County Jail, where he has remained since May 4.
The case was investigated by the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office, South Toms River Police Department and Ocean County Sheriff’s Office. The charges are accusations, and Lanzim is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
