Village of Lawrence: “Village Weather Alert: Nor’easter Approaching”
Dear Residents,
As we head into the weekend, we want to make you aware of a nor’easter that is expected to impact our area. Current forecasts indicate a moderate to moderately high storm that could bring to our area up to approximately 3.5 inches of rain, with peak sustained winds around 35 mph and gusts potentially reaching 50 mph.
While these rainfall amounts and wind speeds are not, by themselves, particularly unusual for our area, the timing of this storm coincides with higher astronomical tides associated with the full moon. The combination of heavy rainfall, strong winds, and elevated tides can compound the storm’s effects, particularly in low-lying and flood-prone areas. A map of these areas has been provided below for reference noting the darker blue area is the flood zone. The Village has preemptively called many residents within the areas that experience flooding due to their naturally lower elevation.
Residents should be especially mindful of the upcoming high-tide cycles. High tides are currently scheduled for approximately 8:15 p.m. tonight, 8:36 a.m. Saturday morning, 8:53 p.m. Saturday night, and 9:13 a.m. Sunday morning. The potential for flooding may be greatest around these periods, particularly if they coincide with heavier rainfall and strong winds.
The Village of Lawrence is closely monitoring the forecast and taking appropriate precautions in preparation for the storm. We encourage residents to remain attentive to weather updates, secure outdoor furniture and other loose items, and take appropriate precautions if your property is susceptible to flooding.
In anticipation of the storm, the Village has coordinated with Nassau County and Town of Hempstead. Village of Lawrence OEM is prepared, and communication equipment was tested and ready. Additionally, Lawrence has arranged with HAFTR School for shelter in the event anyone needs it. First Responders and Emergency Services have been notified and are aware of the situation.
Below, you will find important instructions for reporting outages, emergency contacts, and staying safe during the inclement weather.
Vehicles in flood prone areas should be moved to higher ground. Village of Lawrence public parking lots are available to temporarily park vehicles.
Electronic devices should be charged in advance of the storm. Phones should be left on and plugged in.
If you have medications that require refrigeration, make arrangements now with a neighbor who has a generator.
