- A Memorable First Days of Sukkos in Lakewood

The first days of Sukkos in Lakewood were certainly memorable, with heavy rains and strong winds throughout Yom Tov. A  Nor’easter soaked parts of N.J. with 4+ inches of rain. The Lakewood area received bet 4-5 inches of rain.

B’H, on the first night of Yom Tov, the rain arrived later in the evening, allowing many people to have their first meal inside the sukkah. However, rain continued through much of the remainder of Yom Tov. A brief pause in the rain on the first day allowed time for a brief seudah, though the rain continued straight through the night, making it difficult for many to say the bracha of leishev basukkah and eat a kezayis in the sukkah on the second night. On the second day, the rain stopped early, allowing a few hours for people to have a seudah in the sukkah. The rain then resumed and continued for the rest of Yom Tov.

The weather also caused significant damage to many sukkahs. Some sukkahs collapsed, while in others the schach fell in, caved in, or was blown away. Some schach became extremely heavy from the accumulated rainwater on the shlock, causing the sukkah underneath to give way and, in some cases, topple inward. Many awnings also broke or were unable to withstand the strong winds. Despite the severe weather conditions, there were no reports of any power outages. In Ocean County, some 17,800 customers lost power around midday, including 10,800 in Brick, or 30% of the town. The Lexington area blackout from 930 to 1230.

Nearby areas in Ocean and Monmouth counties experienced much higher totals such as Toms River with 3.70 inches and Bradley Beach with over 5 inches while Lakewood remained on the lower end of the regional precipitation spectrum.
