Following the nor’easter that impacted the area from September 25–28, the Village of Lawrence is thanking residents for their cooperation, caution, and preparedness, as well as the many individuals and agencies who worked together to prepare and protect the community.
The storm brought approximately 3.5 inches of rainfall, sustained winds approaching 35 mph and gusts of up to 50 mph, along with elevated tides. In advance of the storm, the Village proactively monitored conditions, cleared catch basins, tested emergency communications, and coordinated with local, county and emergency-service partners.
“I want to thank the residents of Lawrence for their cooperation, caution, and attention to the information provided by the Village,” said Mayor Samuel (Shlomo) Nahmias. “I am equally grateful to everyone who worked tirelessly to prepare and protect our community.”
The Mayor expressed his appreciation to Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman, Town of Hempstead Supervisor John Ferretti, Village Administrator Gerry Castro, OEM Liaison Dr. Marc Sicklick, Village DPW, the Nassau County Police Department, the Lawrence-Cedarhurst Fire Department, Hatzalah, and all emergency-management personnel.
The Village extends special thanks to HAFTR for making shelter arrangements available if needed, as well as to PSEG Long Island for its preparedness and coordination throughout the storm.
Village officials emphasized that while earlier predictions varied, and surrounding areas faced a greater impact, the storm was handled with a measured approach based on the information and forecasts available at the time.
“The storm was what we prepared for,” said Administrator Gerry Castro. “We did not want to hype the situation, but we also did not want to underplay it. We prepared based on the information available and worked closely with our partners.”
The Village will continue to provide timely and accurate information to the best of its ability, relying on official weather and emergency-management information to keep residents informed.
The Village of Lawrence thanks all of the residents, first responders, municipal employees, and community partners who helped keep Lawrence safe throughout the storm.
