KYIV, Ukraine (VINnews) – — President Volodymyr Zelensky on Tuesday joined members of Ukraine’s Jewish community at a ceremony marking 85 years since the Babyn Yar massacre, when tens of thousands of Jews were killed by Nazi forces and their collaborators in Kyiv.
The ceremony brought together Jewish community leaders, foreign diplomats and Ukrainian officials to remember the victims of one of the Holocaust’s most notorious massacres.
Zelensky said the atrocities committed at Babyn Yar must be remembered as Russia continues its war against Ukraine.
About 50 foreign ambassadors attended, including Israel’s Ambassador to Ukraine Roi Rosenblit, as well as representatives from the United States, Canada, France, Germany, Britain, Italy and Japan.
The ceremony also came as Ukraine’s Jewish community mourns the death of Daniel Umansky, a 14-year-old Israeli citizen killed by a Russian drone in Kyiv last week.
According to the Federation of Jewish Communities of Ukraine, Umansky’s body is expected to be transferred from Moldova to Israel on Wednesday.
