AOC Event Erupts in ‘Intifada,’ ‘River to the Sea’ Chants
At a Cornell University event in Ithaca, N.Y., earlier this week attended by Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.), keffiyeh-clad students led a chant of “from the river to the sea” and said “long live the student intifada.”
The students who led the chants at the event, described as a town hall and called “Students vs. Billionaires,” were Mina Petrova and Zoe Reisman.
The New York representative recently rejoined the Democratic Socialists of America after seven years of a lapsed membership and was introduced to the crowd by the Cornell Young Democratic Socialists, one of whom sported a keffiyeh.
“Cornell is fundamentally a capitalist institution that prioritizes billionaires and profit over students and community and is controlled by CEO trustees that are profiting off of genocide and war,” Petrova told the crowd of 2,000 at the standing-room-only event.
“We have a responsibility to stand in solidarity with oppressed peoples everywhere,” she added. “Student activism is not dead. Long live student resistance, and long live the student intifada. Thank you.”
Then Reisman took the microphone.
“Thank you and just for one second I’d like you guys to repeat after me: ‘From the river to the sea. Palestine will be free.’ Thank you!” she said.
In her speech, AOC did not push back, instead saying in her speech that it was wrong to discipline students who were suspended from Cornell University over the protests “for protesting the genocide in Palestine on campus.”
