Two New York Men Indicted In South Toms River Molotov Cocktail Arson Case
Two New York men have been indicted in connection with a March incident in South Toms River in which Molotov cocktails were thrown at a vehicle and toward a residence, according to the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office.
Ocean County Prosecutor Bradley D. Billhimer announced that Tashaun Normand, 42, of the Bronx, and Tahkem Boynton, 28, of Fresh Meadows, were each indicted on two counts of Aggravated Arson, Conspiracy to Commit Aggravated Arson, and two counts of Unlawful Possession of a Prohibited Weapon.
The charges stem from a March 23 incident at approximately 3:15 p.m. on Belmont Drive. South Toms River Police and the Manitou Park Fire Company responded to a reported vehicle fire and found flames inside a 2010 GMC Terrain, along with a separate fire in a grassy area near the residence.
Investigators also recovered a broken glass bottle and another bottle containing liquid with a torn rag placed inside, which authorities said was consistent with a Molotov cocktail.
An investigation by the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crime Unit-Arson Squad and several local agencies determined that the vehicle fire originated at the front windshield and was intentionally set. Prosecutors say Normand threw the Molotov cocktails at the vehicle and in the direction of the residence.
Normand was arrested by the Tennessee Highway Patrol on March 30 and was extradited to New Jersey on July 19. He remains lodged in the Ocean County Jail.
Investigators later determined that Boynton conspired with Normand and was present at the scene, prosecutors said. Boynton is currently being held at the Otis Bantum Correctional Facility in New York on an unrelated matter.
The charges are accusations, and both defendants are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
