Mossad Takes Lead in Suspected Hijacking Probe, Israeli Leaders Weigh In
Israel’s intelligence agency, the Mossad, is reportedly taking the lead in investigating the alleged plot to hijack and crash a flydubai flight bound for Tel Aviv overnight with about 180 Israeli passengers aboard.
A fight broke out in the cockpit as the alleged hijacker, who was a co-pilot, tried to take control of the Boeing 737 MAX, managing to push the aircraft into a nosedive of 14,000 feet in just one minute. Passengers rushed the cockpit and subdued the potential hijacker. The plane was diverted to Tabuk, Saudi Arabia, where both pilots, who sustained wounds in the cockpit fight, were taken to a hospital for treatment. Video footage shows that a passenger was wounded and bleeding as well.
Israel is coordinating with Saudi Arabia to send an Israeli Air Force plane to retrieve the stranded passengers and bring them to Israel, where they will be debriefed by the Shin Bet.
The suspect’s motives are under investigation by both Saudi and Israeli intelligence.
Israeli leaders weighed in on the incident.
Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich said that the incident should be treated as premeditated murder and any terror organizations behind it should be brought to justice. Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir lauded the courage of the passengers who intervened to save the aircraft from a fatal crash landing, calling it miraculous and arguing that the incident provides grounds for escalation of military operations against terror groups in Iran, Lebanon, Gaza, and Judea and Samaria.
Opposition Leader Yair Lapid dismissed rumors that the situation had been discussed during his security meeting with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, saying it was not mentioned at all and accusing leakers of dangerous and reckless political manipulation.
