HOW THEY STOPPED HIM: Flydubai Passengers Hog-Tied Suspect With Headphone Cords
One of the passengers on the flydubai flight that was nearly hijacked recounted that passengers tied up the suspect with cords from in-flight headphones.
Zvika Manes, CEO of Barak Capital Underwriting, who was one of the three passengers who restrained the rogue co-pilot, told Israeli broadcaster KAN News that they used the cords from the headphones that are supplied to passengers to tie him up. He said his wife was the one who initially discovered that something was wrong when she went to the restroom with their daughter and heard the sounds of a confrontation coming from the cockpit.
Prime Minister Netanyahu also added details about the incident and praised the passengers who rushed the cockpit.
“During the flight, as they approached Israel, one of the pilots stabbed the other pilot and apparently tried to crash the plane with everyone aboard,” Netanyahu said, adding that a passenger told him that the aircraft spun and then plummeted.

“He told me that, somehow, he managed to break into the cockpit with one of the crew members, and together they subdued the stabbing pilot while he was trying to sabotage the aircraft’s systems,” Netanyahu added.
Another member of the flight crew then entered the cockpit and righted the airplane, according to the premier.
“I salute these heroes, who showed extraordinary resourcefulness and courage,” he said. “They saved many lives. They prevented a major disaster.”
He also said that the alleged hijacker had been arrested.
“The stabbing pilot has been arrested and is currently being interrogated by the Saudi authorities,” Netanyahu said. “We are maintaining continuous contact with the relevant authorities to ensure the passengers remain safe and are returned home securely.”
The incident unfolded overnight as a fight broke out in the cockpit of the flydubai airplane carrying about 180 Israeli passengers. The alleged hijacker, who was a co-pilot, tried to take control of the Boeing 737 MAX, managing to push the aircraft into a nosedive of 14,000 feet in just one minute. Passengers rushed the cockpit and subdued the potential hijacker. The plane was diverted to Tabuk, Saudi Arabia, where both pilots, who sustained wounds in the cockpit fight, were taken to a hospital for treatment. Video footage shows that a passenger was wounded and bleeding as well.
Israel is coordinating with Saudi Arabia to send an Israeli Air Force plane to retrieve the stranded passengers and bring them to Israel, where they will be debriefed by the Shin Bet. The suspect’s motives are under investigation by both Saudi and Israeli intelligence.
The Mossad is taking the lead in the probe, and the transportation minister has requested a freeze on flights between Israel and the United Arab Emirates while the investigation is ongoing.
