NEW YORK — Spike Lee was restrained by security at Yankee Stadium on Wednesday night after a confrontation with a fan who reportedly taunted the filmmaker about Palestine before Game 2 of the Yankees-Red Sox playoff series.

Lee was in the Legends Suite before the game when the encounter unfolded. According to people cited by Fox Sports reporter Andy Slater, the fan was filming Lee while questioning him about his views on Palestine.

The New York Post reported that the confrontation escalated when the fan, while seeking a selfie, asked Lee to say, “— Palestine.” Lee became angry and moved toward the fan before several people intervened.

Video circulating online showed Lee being held back by multiple people as he attempted to confront the man.

“Why’d you come over to me?” Lee could be heard saying as people restrained him.

A man in a blue jacket was also seen pointing toward a nearby table and telling someone, “You’ve gotta go. You’ve gotta go.”

The fan was eventually removed from the area, according to the Post.

Lee remained at the stadium and watched the game despite the confrontation.

The incident came months after Lee drew attention for his public display of Palestinian imagery during NBA All-Star Weekend in February.

Lee attended the All-Star Game wearing a keffiyeh-patterned sweater and carrying a bag featuring Palestinian flag imagery and pins. The appearance drew criticism because Israeli-born Portland Trail Blazers player Deni Avdija was participating in the game as the first Israeli selected to an NBA All-Star Game.

Lee later addressed the controversy, saying his clothing was intended to express his concern for Palestinian children and civilians and his belief in human dignity. He said it was not intended as hostility toward Jewish people or to support violence against anyone.

The Yankees defeated the Red Sox 9-2 on Wednesday, sweeping the two-game American League Wild Card Series and advancing to the Division Series.

Lee, 69, is an Oscar-winning filmmaker best known for movies including “Do the Right Thing,” “Malcolm X,” “Jungle Fever” and “BlacKkKlansman.” He has been one of the most recognizable celebrity fans at Yankee Stadium for decades and is also a longtime New York Knicks superfan.

A Brooklyn native, Lee has remained closely connected to New York sports and is frequently seen at Yankees and Knicks games. He has also been an outspoken public figure on political and social issues throughout his career.

Lee attended Game 1 of the Yankees-Red Sox series Tuesday with his daughter, Satchel, before returning to Yankee Stadium for Wednesday night’s game.
