Ben-Gvir Demands Flydubai Co-Pilot Be Extradited to Israel After Alleged Attempt to Crash Plane

Oct 1, 2026·2 min read

National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir says he will demand that Israel’s security cabinet push for the extradition of the Omani flydubai co-pilot accused of stabbing the captain and attempting to crash a Tel Aviv-bound passenger jet carrying roughly 170 people, most of them Israelis.

Ben-Gvir says he wants the suspect brought to Israel and prosecuted here.

“Someone who planned to crash a plane and murder 180 Israelis should be extradited to Israel and pay the heaviest price here,” Ben-Gvir said.

“Anyone who tries to murder or harm Israelis will be pursued by the State of Israel and held to account anywhere in the world.”

The suspect remains in Saudi Arabia following the extraordinary events aboard flydubai Flight FZ1073 from Dubai to Tel Aviv.

According to Israeli officials, the co-pilot attacked and stabbed Indian Captain Smit Machchhar before allegedly attempting to crash the aircraft. Despite being seriously wounded, Machchhar fought back and managed to unlock the cockpit door, allowing passengers and crew to intervene and subdue the attacker.

The aircraft ultimately made an emergency landing in Tabuk, Saudi Arabia.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Thursday that information gathered by Israel indicates the co-pilot had undergone what he described as “Islamist radical indoctrination.” The UAE has launched an investigation into whether the attack was connected to terrorism and whether it was premeditated. The suspect’s motive has not yet been officially established.

Getting him to Israel could prove complicated.

Saudi Arabia, where he is currently being held, has no diplomatic relations with Israel. Neither does Oman, his home country. The UAE is reportedly expected to take custody of him following the Saudi investigation, but Israel and the UAE do not have a bilateral extradition treaty.

Ben-Gvir nevertheless says Israel should pursue every available avenue to bring the accused attacker to Israel to face justice.
