NYC Public School Educator Comments: “Yeah we don’t support Jews here.”
On September 28 the StopAntisemitism group published screenshots identifying Meera Mangaroo, a science teacher at MS 323 Bronx Writing Academy, and a TikTok reply from an account it attributed to her: “Yeah we don’t support Jews here.” The comment came after another user noted that Jewish-owned businesses are minority-owned, in a thread about Häagen-Dazs, the ice-cream company founded in the Bronx by Polish-Jewish immigrants Reuben and Rose Mattus. A photo circulated with the post shows a woman in a classroom wearing an “NYC Teacher” shirt. StopAntisemitism asked the obvious question: would Jewish students, families, or colleagues feel safe around an educator who publicly says she does not support Jews?
United Jewish Teachers president Moshe Spern amplified the material and drew the line the comment itself already drew. “Not Israel. Not Netanyahu. Jews,” he wrote. Hours later he posted on X a second clip, where he attributed to the same teacher, filmed in 2023, roughly two months after the October 7 massacre. In it she reacts to a U.S. veto of a U.N. ceasefire resolution, calls Gaza a genocide, groups it with Congo and Armenia, blames “colonizers,” and says she is packing up to leave the country. Spern separated the two statements on purpose: the video is her Israel-and-Palestine content; the TikTok reply was not about Israel. It was “we don’t support Jews here.” Two statements. One classroom and it’s Jew hatred.
Spern told 5 Towns Central that “Educators cannot inside or outside the school building express racist and antisemitic viewpoints. What she wrote on TikTok was offensive and her 2023 video of libeling Israel just 2 months after October 7th massacre shows that this woman is dangerous to Jewish students. There must be an investigation.”
Jewish students in District 9 deserve protection. MS 323 is a grades 6–8 school at 270 East 167th Street; its principal is Lauren Hasson. As of October 1, neither New York City Public Schools nor the teacher has publicly answered.
End Jew Hatred and IMPACT plan to protest at the chancellor’s office on Friday, October 2. The demand is narrow and overdue: investigate, remove her from students, and say the word antisemitism. A public-school teacher does not get to declare, in writing, that Jews are unsupported “here,” then return to a classroom as if the sentence were a policy disagreement. It was a statement of hostility toward a people. The city either treats it that way, or it admits the rule does not apply when the target is Jewish.
