Hazmat teams from Lakewood and Berkeley responded to Jackson during Chol Hamoed after a vehicle carrying an unknown quantity of pool chemicals caught fire, prompting concerns over potentially hazardous runoff.
Jackson firefighters were dispatched at approximately 1:30 p.m. Tuesday to a reported vehicle fire on Canterbury Court.
Upon arrival, firefighters confirmed that the vehicle contained an unknown quantity of pool chemicals, prompting the response of Hazmat teams from the Lakewood and Berkeley fire departments.
As crews worked to extinguish the fire, efforts were made to contain runoff from the scene and prevent it from entering nearby storm drains while Hazmat crews assessed the potential hazard.
Under the direction of Hazmat personnel, the runoff was diluted until it was determined to be safe.
The Lakewood Fire Department’s Hazmat Unit assisted with the response, working with Berkeley Hazmat and Jackson firefighters to evaluate the chemicals and help contain and neutralize the runoff.
