The Ramapo Police Department has received a national award for its use of drones to help officers respond to emergencies and get information from the scene faster.
The department was presented with Skydio’s 2026 Aerial Achievement Award for Innovation last month at the company’s Ascend conference. Ramapo was chosen from more than 70 nominations submitted for this year’s awards.
Ramapo’s Drone as First Responder program has two drone docks located in strategic areas around the town. When officers respond to a call, a drone can be sent up to provide a live view of the area and give responding officers more information before they arrive.
The program has become an important part of the department’s operations, helping officers respond more quickly and make better decisions while also using its resources more efficiently.
The department credited the remote pilots, dispatchers, supervisors and patrol officers who have worked with the program since it was launched.
Police also thanked Town Supervisor Michael Specht, Chief of Staff Mona Montal and the Town Board for supporting the use of the technology.
