President Trump Says He Would Support A Presidential Retreat At His West Palm Beach Golf Club

Oct 7, 2026·3 min read

WASHINGTON D.C (VINnews) — President Trump has said he is willing to see part of Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach developed as a presidential retreat modeled on Camp David, describing the idea as a facility for future presidents rather than for himself.

Trump said the military and the Secret Service raised the possibility because of the property’s security advantages. “They asked if I’d be willing to do it, and I said I would be,” he told Fox News correspondent Peter Doocy. “This wouldn’t be for me. This would be for all future presidents.”

The comments track a proposal already before Palm Beach County. In a Sept. 3 letter to county commissioners, attorney Harvey Oyer, writing for Trump International Golf Club, asked that the course be designated a U.S. presidential golf course for past, current and future presidents and for visiting foreign leaders, at the discretion of the White House.

The club operates a 27-hole course on county-owned land at 3505 Summit Blvd., near West Palm Beach. Under the plan, the county would make a parcel available to the federal government. Trump International would pay to build a presidential lodging facility, designed with the General Services Administration and the Secret Service, and would keep paying its lease on the golf course. The lodging would have a separate entrance from the private club, county officials have been told.

Future presidents would also be offered complimentary memberships. Oyer wrote that construction would take long enough that Trump would be out of office before the project could be finished, and he called it a gift to Trump’s successors, the public and Palm Beach County residents. No name has been selected.

A White House official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the government has asked to study a retreat at the course so later presidents could hold meetings and use the property. The official cited the open layout, the absence of homes along the holes, nearby law enforcement and the short drive to Palm Beach International Airport, which was renamed for Trump earlier this year.

Palm Beach County Administrator Joseph Abruzzo has said the county is reviewing the proposal and seeking more information. County staff were directed last month to begin talks.

Camp David, in Maryland’s Catoctin Mountains, has been the official presidential retreat since the 1940s. Trump has used it sparingly and has spent much of his downtime at his Florida properties. The West Palm Beach course was also the site of a September 2024 assassination attempt, when a gunman was spotted in bushes along the perimeter. Ryan Routh was later convicted in the case.

Oyer has compared the idea to Camp David and to well-known official residences abroad, writing that a presidential golf course in Palm Beach County would put the county on the same map. County commissioners have not voted on the request.
