New Jersey Uncovers Over 1,000 Additional Voter Registration Irregularities as Governor Sherrill Announces MVC Reforms

Oct 7, 2026·2 min read

Governor Mikie Sherrill announced Wednesday that a statewide review of voter registration procedures at the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission (MVC) uncovered approximately 1,090 additional records requiring correction or further investigation, prompting a series of reforms aimed at preventing similar problems in the future.

According to the Governor’s Office, approximately 750 records were affected by a software error between June 2023 and June 2024. Those individuals selected “no” when asked whether they met the age requirements to vote, but their information was nevertheless processed for voter registration. Officials confirmed that all were actually old enough to vote and that no underage individuals voted because of the error.

Of those 750 records, approximately 380 involved individuals who never voted and whose registrations are being deleted. Another 320 individuals had other potentially valid registrations and voted, with their records referred to county election officials for review. Approximately 50 individuals registered solely because of the error and subsequently voted. Their registrations are being deleted, and their cases are being referred to county officials.

The investigation also uncovered approximately 340 potentially improper registrations connected to MVC re-entry events for incarcerated individuals dating back to 2016. Some individuals incorrectly declared themselves eligible to vote while serving sentences for indictable offenses. An additional 60 individuals identified as currently incarcerated are also being referred to county officials for corrective action.

The administration emphasized that neither of the newly identified categories involved noncitizens.

In response, the MVC is implementing a new daily automated auditing system designed to verify voter registration information before it is transferred to election officials. Records containing missing or conflicting information will be flagged for manual review.

Additional reforms include expanded translation services in more than 80 languages, clearer voter eligibility instructions, updated online registration procedures, and additional eligibility confirmation questions at MVC re-entry events. The agency is also transitioning to a new technology vendor.

Sherrill said the investigation remains ongoing and pledged to continue correcting registration errors while protecting eligible voters.

The announcement follows earlier findings involving thousands of voter registrations affected by a separate citizenship-related processing error at the MVC.
