Iran Has ‘LOST COMPLETE CONTROL’ of Strait of Hormuz, Rubio Declares
Speaking to reporters in Athens Wednesday, Secretary of State Marco Rubio said that Iran’s economy is in “total and complete freefall” and that it has “lost complete control of the straits.”
“The Straits of Hormuz are open. There’s almost as much oil flowing out now as there was before this conflict began. So they’ve lost complete control of the straits,” he said, adding that harsh sanctions have achieved their objective of crippling Iran’s economy, bringing the country to “a place few countries in the world have been.”
Because Iran spends all its money on Hamas and Hezbollah, “Iran cannot have a nuclear weapon, simple, period, end of story,” the secretary of state said.
“And anything they agree to that would be acceptable to the United States has to be something that ensures that Iran will never have a nuclear weapon,” he added.
Shipping data shows that crude oil exports last week were hovering at around pre-war levels, but attacks on ships transiting the Strait of Hormuz continue to increase, reaching their highest level last week since the operation against Iran began in February.
Rubio was in Greece for the dedication of the U.S. Embassy in Greece, which was recently renovated, and for talks with the Greek government on increasing intelligence sharing on counterterrorism. Greece has been a key NATO ally of the United States, helping to protect shipping in the Red Sea and allowing the U.S. to maintain military installations to provide security in the Mediterranean Sea.
