American Airlines to Bring Starlink Wi-Fi to Entire Mainline Fleet
FORT WORTH, Texas — American Airlines announced Thursday that it will bring SpaceX’s Starlink satellite internet service to its entire mainline fleet, expanding a previously announced plan to equip more than 500 aircraft.
Installations are scheduled to begin in early 2027 and will cover more than 1,000 Airbus and Boeing narrowbody and widebody aircraft, according to the airline. American Airlines Newsroom
American said its Starlink-equipped aircraft will use SpaceX’s Performance Aero Terminal, capable of speeds of up to 1 gigabit per second per terminal.
The expanded rollout will give passengers high-speed Wi-Fi for streaming, gaming, video calls, work and browsing throughout their flights.
The airline said more than 165 million customers fly on its mainline aircraft each year. Its mainline fleet currently includes more than 1,030 aircraft, with more than 900 single-aisle planes and the remainder widebodies.
American initially announced in May that it would install Starlink on more than 500 Airbus aircraft. Thursday’s announcement expands the program to include its Boeing fleet as well.
“Customers will have fast, reliable internet from gate to gate,” said Lauren Dreyer, SpaceX’s vice president of Starlink business operations.
The announcement makes American one of the largest airlines to commit to Starlink across its mainline fleet.
