WATCH: Houthi Strike Hits Aircraft at Major Riyadh Airport, Sending Smoke Billowing
The Houthis struck King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, Wednesday, killing a Sudanese national, according to the Saudi Civil Aviation Authority. The strike hit an aircraft, which ignited on impact and generated thick plumes of smoke.
The attack on one of the most important airports in Saudi Arabia has caused airlines to cancel flights, while Yemen has imposed a no-fly zone in retaliation for what it says are attacks on its civilians.
A strike on Abha International Airport the previous day killed two people, one from Bangladesh and the other from the Philippines, and injured 28 passengers. The strike on King Khalid International Airport injured 89 people. Authorities said all injured people had been transported to the hospital for treatment.
“The Authority continues — in full coordination and continuous cooperation with the relevant security agencies — to assess the damage and take all necessary measures to ensure the safety of passengers and airport employees and to maintain the highest standards of security and safety at the Kingdom’s airports,” the aviation authority said.
After capturing and then losing the Bab el-Mandeb Strait to Yemen, the Houthis have successfully launched a series of deadly attacks against Saudi Arabia.
