Agudath Israel Urges Governor Sherrill to Approve Federal Scholarship Program That Could Provide Thousands in Tuition Assistance to NJ Families
Agudath Israel of America is calling on New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill to opt the state into the new Federal Scholarship Tax Credit program, which could provide thousands of dollars in additional tuition assistance annually to families sending their children to yeshivos and other private schools.
In a statement released Thursday, Agudath Israel warned that New Jersey families could miss out on significant federal scholarship opportunities unless the governor agrees to participate in the program.
According to the organization, 30 states have already notified the IRS of their intention to participate. Approximately 96% of children in each state could potentially qualify for scholarships, including students attending public, charter, and private schools.
Under the newly released federal rules, taxpayers will be able to contribute up to $1,700 annually to approved nonprofit scholarship organizations and receive a dollar-for-dollar federal tax credit. Married couples filing jointly could qualify for a combined credit of up to $3,400.
The program, scheduled to begin in 2027, allows donors to contribute to qualifying scholarship organizations in participating states, but only students in states that opt in will be eligible to receive scholarships.
Agudath Israel said it played a key role alongside coalition partners in drafting the original legislation and advocating for its passage.
The organization also revealed that it has been holding discussions with Governor Sherrill and her administration for several months as the governor considers whether New Jersey should participate.
With federal regulations now published, Agudath Israel is encouraging residents to contact the governor and urge her to approve New Jersey’s participation, emphasizing the potential financial relief for families struggling with rising tuition costs.
