Netanyahu Reaches Out to Bolsonaro as Brazil’s Election Could Reshape Ties With Israel

Oct 9, 2026·1 min read

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu spoke by telephone last night with Brazilian presidential candidate Flávio Bolsonaro, according to the Prime Minister’s Office.

Netanyahu congratulated Bolsonaro on finishing first in the opening round of Brazil’s presidential election this week, the PMO said.

Flávio Bolsonaro, the son of former Brazilian president and outspoken Israel supporter Jair Bolsonaro, is set to face incumbent President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva in a runoff election on October 25. A Bolsonaro victory could restore Brazil’s position as one of Israel’s closest allies, as conservative and pro-Israel political movements gain ground across Latin America.

Netanyahu invited Bolsonaro to visit Israel, and the Brazilian candidate extended an invitation for Netanyahu to visit Brazil as well.

“The two intend to renew the deep friendship between the two countries,” says the Israeli readout, “as part of the transformation taking place in Israel’s relations with South American countries.”
