Suspected Terrorist Arrested Near Jerusalem With Knife And Materials For Possible Firebomb
JERUSALEM (VINnews) — Israeli security forces arrested a Palestinian man in his 20s in the town of al-Eizariya, east of Jerusalem, on Sunday after intelligence indicated that he intended to carry out an imminent terrorist attack, police said.
According to the Israel Police, the suspect was wearing a face covering and was found carrying a knife and a glass cup containing nails and paper. Investigators suspect the materials were intended to be thrown and ignited as part of an attack.
The arrest was carried out by officers from the Ma’ale Adumim police station, part of the Judea and Samaria District’s Gilead regional unit, together with Border Police officers from the Jerusalem Envelope unit.
Following the intelligence warning, security forces established roadblocks in the area and launched searches to locate the suspect. He was subsequently apprehended in al-Eizariya, where officers searched his belongings and discovered the knife and the other materials.
The suspect was taken to the Ma’ale Adumim police station for questioning and was later jailed. The Judea and Samaria District’s central unit for serious security offenses is leading the investigation, which remains ongoing.
Police have not publicly identified the suspect or released further details about the intended target of the alleged attack.
The arrest comes amid continued counterterrorism operations across Judea and Samaria and the Jerusalem area. Israeli security forces regularly conduct intelligence-led searches and arrests aimed at preventing attacks before they can be carried out.
The arrest also follows several recent cases of planned attacks in and around Jerusalem.
On October 8, prosecutors filed an indictment against a 22-year-old pharmacy student from Beit Hanina, identified as Mohammed Shalabi, who is accused of planning attacks using toxic substances and explosives. According to the indictment, he researched methods of preparing poisons and explosives and purchased chemical materials. The allegations have not yet been proven in court.
In a separate operation on September 15, Border Police officers arrested three suspects in the village of Bir Nabala, north of Jerusalem, over alleged involvement in terrorist activity. The arrests were conducted with intelligence support from the Shin Bet security agency and the Judea and Samaria District of the Israel Police.
