About Time: U.S. Moves to Restrict International Criminal Court Over Warrants Against Israeli Leaders
The United States has imposed sanctions targeting the International Criminal Court (ICC), escalating its opposition to the international tribunal over its legal actions against Israeli officials.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the measures would prohibit transactions with the court, aiming to restrict its access to financial resources and limit its ability to carry out its work.
Secretary Rubio: “Either the ICC will end its threats, or we will end the ICC. And we expect our allies, many of whom are part of the ICC, and that rely on American service members for their defense, to rein in this rogue court. If they do not, the United States will continue its campaign to dismantle the ICC, piece by piece, until Americans are threatened no longer.”
The move comes amid longstanding American objections to the ICC’s decision to issue arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and other Israeli officials. The warrants allege crimes including the use of starvation as a method of warfare and intentionally directing attacks against civilians.
Washington has consistently challenged the court’s jurisdiction over citizens of countries that are not parties to the Rome Statute, the treaty establishing the ICC, arguing that the tribunal lacks authority over American personnel and certain officials from allied nations.
Today, the Trump Administration is sanctioning the ICC.
This action should encourage our Allies within the Court to work for solutions to end this threat to U.S. sovereignty forever. https://t.co/D86dCqLUaZ
