WASHINGTON D.C — The rapid expansion of massive data centers to support artificial intelligence has emerged as a defining debate in the U.S. midterm campaign, according to Sky News reporting. The facilities are reshaping rural and suburban landscapes while fueling grassroots opposition that crosses traditional political lines.

Sky News U.S. correspondent examined how the infrastructure boom, strongly backed by President Trump, is altering communities and public opinion ahead of the elections. Residents and local officials cite concerns over soaring electricity demands, water consumption for cooling systems, noise, strain on power grids and the conversion of farmland. Polls from organizations including Gallup have found roughly 70% of Americans oppose building such centers in their own communities, with majorities of Democrats, Republicans and independents expressing reservations.

Trump has continued to champion the projects as engines of economic growth, tax revenue and competition with China. He has characterized communities rejecting them as risking becoming “backwards and poor” and described some opposition as a conspiracy that benefits foreign rivals. Despite this, the backlash has prompted candidates from both parties in competitive races to call for pauses, tighter rules on energy and water use, or an end to certain tax incentives. More than 1,000 communities have pursued moratoriums or restrictions, affecting projects valued in the hundreds of billions of dollars.

Technology companies including Amazon, Google, Microsoft, Meta and Oracle are driving much of the investment, with estimates of U.S. spending on data centers exceeding $700 billion this year. Supporters point to temporary construction jobs, long-term tax contributions and the strategic need to expand computing capacity. Critics argue the permanent local employment is limited relative to the scale and that household utility bills are rising as a result.

The issue has scrambled party alignments. Republican candidates in some states face pressure from their base, while Democrats have featured the facilities in campaign advertising. As the midterms near, the debate continues to shape local and national messaging across the country.
