PG&E cut electricity to approximately 10,410 customers in Northern California early Sunday, exposing businesses to interrupted sales and refrigeration losses as strong winds and dry conditions increased wildfire danger.

The utility’s October 11 morning update identified targeted areas of Colusa, Glenn, Shasta, Tehama and Yolo counties. The outages form part of a preventive shutoff operation that began Friday and could affect approximately 12,200 customer accounts across portions of 17 counties and three tribal areas through Monday.

For a store, restaurant or small manufacturer, the disruption can extend beyond the hours without electricity. Refrigerated products may require alternative storage, equipment may need restarting, and customers may take their business elsewhere. PG&E’s update did not provide an estimate of commercial losses.

The shutoffs are intended to prevent electrical equipment from starting a wildfire. High winds can blow branches and debris into power lines or damage equipment. When surrounding vegetation is dry, an electrical spark can ignite a fire that spreads rapidly.

PG&E describes preventive shutoffs as a last resort within its wildfire protection program. Its decisions depend on weather forecasts and conditions on the ground, including wind, humidity and nearby vegetation.

Restoration does not guarantee that the disruption is over. PG&E warned Sunday that customers whose electricity had already returned could face another shutoff if dangerous conditions developed again.

That uncertainty complicates reopening decisions. A business may regain electricity long enough to restart operations, only to face another interruption. Owners must weigh the cost of remaining closed against the risk of bringing back workers or replenishing perishable inventory before service stabilizes.

The utility’s forecast called for Saturday wind gusts of 30–45 mph, reaching 55 mph in parts of the Northern Sierra, followed by northerly winds Sunday in the Sacramento Valley.

Power restoration also requires more than an improvement in the weather. Crews must inspect electrical equipment and complete necessary repairs before reconnecting affected areas.

For customers, the next milestone is the local weather clearance and inspection process. The broader risk window extends through Monday, but that is not a guaranteed restoration deadline for every address.
