Iran Offers to Mediate Saudi-Houthi Talks After Deadly Attacks on Riyadh

Oct 12, 2026·2 min read

Iran has offered to help facilitate political talks between Saudi Arabia and Yemen’s Houthi movement as tensions intensify following deadly attacks on Saudi territory. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi conveyed Tehran’s willingness to assist in opening a diplomatic channel during a telephone conversation with Saudi Foreign Minister Faisal bin Farhan.

According to Iran’s Foreign Ministry, the two officials discussed regional developments during a call held the previous night, including efforts to find a political resolution to the growing crisis. Araghchi voiced concern over the rising tensions, cautioning that continued military action and the absence of meaningful diplomatic engagement could make the situation increasingly difficult to resolve.

Although the Persian-language version of Iran’s official statement referred to dialogue between Saudi Arabia and Yemen, the newspaper Al-Araby Al-Jadeed reported that Tehran’s proposal specifically involved helping arrange negotiations between Riyadh and the Houthis.

Riyadh Confirms Call but Makes No Commitment to Negotiations

Saudi Arabia’s Foreign Ministry confirmed that the conversation between the two foreign ministers had taken place. According to Riyadh, the discussion focused on the latest regional escalation and ongoing efforts to address it.

However, Saudi officials have not publicly outlined the details of those efforts or announced any agreement to begin negotiations with the Houthis. No timetable or formal framework for potential talks has been disclosed.

Iran’s offer comes as Saudi Arabia faces mounting security concerns following attacks attributed to the Houthis, a group supported by Tehran. The initiative raises questions about whether diplomatic engagement can resume and whether negotiations could help prevent further escalation.

First Publicly Announced Contact Since Houthi Attacks Intensified

According to Reuters, the phone call marks the first publicly announced communication between the two foreign ministers since the Houthis stepped up their attacks against Saudi Arabia.

The conversation followed Houthi strikes targeting King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh on Saturday. The attacks reportedly killed 13 people and injured more than 300, making the incident the deadliest attack inside Saudi Arabia in over a decade.

Despite Iran’s stated willingness to facilitate dialogue, it remains uncertain whether the proposal will lead to formal negotiations. Saudi Arabia has not publicly accepted Tehran’s offer of mediation or confirmed plans for direct talks with the Houthi movement.
