Macron Rejects Trump’s Energy Ceasefire Claim, Says Russia Continues Striking Ukraine
French President Emmanuel Macron said he has seen no evidence of an energy ceasefire by Russia, following US President Donald Trump’s announcement a day earlier that Ukraine and Russia had agreed to halt attacks on energy infrastructure.
Macron stressed that progress would require “if there is a real truce on both sides,” arguing that recent events contradict claims of a pause in Russian attacks. He said “the facts show Russia has continued to bomb energy infrastructure [in Ukraine] in the last hours.”
“There is currently no factual reason to change our position. Russia is continuing to bomb both civilians and infrastructure in Ukraine,” he added.
“We say ‘yes’ to seeking an energy ceasefire and resuming peace talks…. but ‘no’ to giving in to the Russian threat,” Macron said.
Trump’s announcement reportedly surprised officials in Kyiv, while Moscow offered no immediate public response. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said Russian forces attacked several Ukrainian power facilities on Sunday, including plants in Kyiv and Kharkiv, triggering electricity outages.
