A school trip in northern Israel ended in tragedy on Monday when an explosion tore through a group of students from the Ort religious yeshiva in Ma’alot who were hiking in the Upper Galilee.

Close to 20 students were wounded in the blast, some of them seriously.

The incident took place in the early afternoon on the Ramim Ridge near Kiryat Shmona. The students apparently came upon a rocket that Hezbollah had fired during the war but that never detonated.

Of the roughly 20 students hurt, one young student was pronounced dead at the scene. Several others are in serious condition and were evacuated to hospitals in the north.

Helicopters from rescue teams and the Israeli Air Force arrived at the scene to help evacuate the wounded.
