SIX FLAGS SHUTDOWN: Nitro Roller Coaster At NJ Great Adventure Closed After Deadly Incident In Georgia
Six Flags Great Adventure in Jackson, New Jersey, has temporarily shut down its popular Nitro roller coaster following a deadly incident involving a similar ride at a Six Flags amusement park in Georgia.
The decision comes after one person was killed and four others were injured Monday afternoon at Six Flags Over Georgia, near Atlanta. The incident reportedly involved the park’s Goliath roller coaster, which is similar in design to Nitro.
In response, Six Flags announced the temporary closure of nine roller coasters across six of its amusement parks nationwide as a precautionary measure.
The deadly incident occurred shortly before 4 p.m. Monday. Emergency personnel responded to the Georgia amusement park, where guests were seen being evacuated from the Goliath roller coaster.
Authorities have not officially disclosed the circumstances surrounding the death or what caused the other injuries. Detectives from the Cobb County Police Department’s Major Crimes Unit are investigating.
“We are deeply saddened by the guest incident at our park today. Our thoughts and heartfelt condolences are with the guest’s family, friends and loved ones,” Six Flags said in a statement.
“Out of an abundance of caution, we have temporarily closed similar attractions across our parks,” the company added. “The safety of our guests and associates remains one of our highest priorities.”
Nitro is among Great Adventure’s most recognizable attractions, drawing thousands of visitors to the Jackson amusement park.
Six Flags has not announced when Nitro or the other affected roller coasters will reopen.
