Mamdani Breaks With His Own Allies to Defend Pro-Israel Police Chief
New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani stated unequivocally Tuesday that he had no plans to fire New York Police Department Commissioner Jessica Tisch after his democratic socialist allies called for her resignation following the shooting of a man in New York City by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents.
The Dominican man, who was in the car at the time of the shooting and was wanted in connection with a previous grand larceny conviction and alleged ties to the Trinitarios gang, was injured, while his 5-year-old son in the back of the car was unharmed.
Darializa Avila Chevalier, with whom Mamdani campaigned and who ultimately won her primary race, said, “The NYPD’s Strategic Response Unit must be dismantled as quickly as possible, and Commissioner Tisch must resign.”
“Jessica Tisch is the police commissioner. I have no plans to change that,” the mayor told reporters in response to a question about her firing.
Mamdani defended Tisch’s record, citing that as the reason he kept her on as commissioner in the first place upon his assumption of the mayoralty and noting record reductions in crime since the beginning of his tenure.
“The reason that I made the decision to have Jessica Tisch as the police commissioner was because of her record of uprooting corruption from the upper echelons of the NYPD while lowering crime across our city,” he explained. “And over the last 10 months that we’ve worked together, we have delivered the lowest recorded number of murders in our city’s history, the lowest recorded number of shootings, as well as shooting victims.”
The mayor and the commissioner hold opposing views on Israel. Mamdani has made his stridently anti-Israel position clear, while Tisch has remained staunchly pro-Israel.
For example, after Mamdani famously refused to join the Israel Day Parade, Tisch said, when asked about the matter, “It’s the mayor’s decision not to march and it’s my decision to march proudly.”
