Rutgers Poll Finds 82% of New Jersey Residents Support Voter ID Requirements

Oct 14, 2026·1 min read

A new Rutgers-Eagleton Poll released Tuesday shows overwhelming support among New Jersey residents for stricter voter identification requirements, with 82% favoring mandatory photo ID when voting in person.

The statewide survey found that 63% strongly support requiring a valid driver’s license, state ID, or U.S. passport at the polls, while another 19% somewhat support the measure. Additionally, 71% favor requiring proof of U.S. citizenship, such as a birth certificate or passport, when registering to vote.

Despite the strong support for additional identification requirements, 74% of residents expressed confidence that in-person ballots would be counted accurately, while 59% expressed confidence in mail-in voting.

The findings come amid renewed debate over election security following the discovery of thousands of voter registration issues involving New Jersey’s Motor Vehicle Commission.

The poll surveyed 1,004 New Jersey adults between September 24 and 27, with a margin of error of 4.1 percentage points.
