Lakewood Mayor Ray Coles Responds to Your ‘Ask The Mayor’ Questions: Beehive, Street Lights, Turn Signals

Oct 14, 2026·3 min read

The following is an ‘Ask The Mayor’ question submitted to TLS, and the Mayor’s response. Email your questions for the Mayor to [email protected].

Question:

Hi,

I’d like to ask you 2 things please:

1) About a big beehive on the School Garden Park parking lot, it’s near the rear entrance to the park hanging down a tree branch. The kids are afraid of going near it. Can you please have them removed?

2) The street lights on School Garden Street. There are 4 poles but only 2 have lights on them. The winter is coming now and it’s starting to get dark early, can you please have JCP&L add another 2 lights to the 2 poles?

Thank you very much!

Response from Mayor Coles:

Good afternoon

I have asked public works to take care of the bee hive

As far as additional lights, we will ask JCP&L. I will also see if we can mount our LED fixtures there instead

Thanks for reaching out

Ray

Question:

Dear Honorable Mayor Coles

Thank you for all that you do to help our city run smoothly. I was wondering if it was possible. Especially in light of the fact that the turn from Route 9 to First Street has been eliminated, would it be possible to make a turn signal allowing turns from Route 9 to North Lake. When the light finally does turn green, there are many cars coming south on Route 9 that make it almost impossible to make the turn. If you could get a turn signal installed, it would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you so much

Marvin

Response from Mayor Coles:

We have asked the DOT to make these changes. We have not heard back from them.

Question:

Good afternoon Mr. Mayor,

I have been traveling to work every day using East Veterans, Cross and White. I never had a problem making left turns, and traffic flowed smoothly until after Rustic (where the schools are). Now that there is a light, but there is no left signal, it’s harder to make a left from Cross onto White. And traffic gets backlogged all the way to East Veterans as well as all the way to James.

Pertaining to Cross and Prospect: the heavy traffic occurs during morning and afternoon rush hours. I believe a traffic light would cause more problems than now. Perhaps it’s time for a roundabout. In areas with roundabouts and jug handles the flow of traffic is much smoother.

Thank you for reading our requests and taking them seriously.

Response from Mayor Coles:

The county is almost ready to begin the widening of Cross from Augusta to the Jackson border. The light there is temporary until widening is complete.

Ray
