Spain’s Socialists Top State Poll as Housing Crisis Dominates Election Debate

Oct 14, 2026·2 min read

MADRID, October 14, 2026 (Reuters) — Spain’s governing Socialist Party (PSOE), led by Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, would receive 34% of the vote if a national election were held today, according to a survey released Wednesday by the government-run Centre for Sociological Research (CIS). The opposition conservative People’s Party (PP) was projected to win 22.2%.

The poll was conducted ahead of next month’s snap election, which Sánchez called after parliament rejected housing measures proposed by his minority government.

The CIS results differ sharply from most other recent surveys, which have suggested that the PP and the far-right Vox party could secure a combined parliamentary majority.

Researchers surveyed 5,025 people during the first week of October, as demonstrations over Spain’s housing crisis were taking place nationwide. The polling preceded the October 7 death in hospital of housing activist Maricarmen Abascal, whose eviction had helped spark the protests.

Vox placed third in the survey with 17.1% support. Sumar, the PSOE’s far-left governing coalition partner, received 6.1% as it continued discussions with other left-wing parties about potential electoral alliances.

Sánchez was also the leading choice for prime minister, favored by 39.3% of respondents. That put him 24.6 percentage points ahead of PP leader Alberto Núñez Feijóo, who received 14.7%. Vox leader Santiago Abascal was preferred by 13.8% of those surveyed.

Housing has become the country’s most prominent public concern, with 55.7% identifying it as Spain’s biggest problem. That was a record level and represented a 20-percentage-point increase from the previous month. Immigration ranked second at 20.9%, followed closely by the economy at 20.3%.
