Deer Mating Season Raises Crash Risk Across New Jersey, With Monmouth County Reporting Highest Number of Collisions
Drivers across New Jersey, including the Lakewood area, are being urged to use extra caution as deer mating season gets underway, bringing an increased risk of deer-related crashes.
According to AAA, New Jersey recorded a record 11,692 deer-related crashes in 2025, with Monmouth County reporting the highest number of collisions statewide.
Between 2020 and 2025, nearly 65,000 deer-related crashes occurred across New Jersey, resulting in more than 4,250 injuries and 15 fatalities.
AAA warns that deer are particularly active during morning and evening commuting hours, with nearly half of all collisions occurring between 6 a.m. and 10 a.m. and between 3 p.m. and 7 p.m.
Motorists are advised to watch for deer near wooded areas and road shoulders, reduce speed, and avoid swerving suddenly if a deer enters the roadway, as doing so could lead to a more serious crash.
