BEITAR ILLIT, Israel (VINnews) — A tragic incident in Israel on Wednesday claimed the life of 9-year-old Eliyahu Azriel of Beitar Illit, who suffered fatal injuries when a burning recycling bin apparently exploded as he walked home from cheder with his brother.

Eliyahu, a fourth-grade student at the Nitei Meir Talmud Torah, was walking home from school along Nadvorna Street toward his home on Harav Oyerbach Street, a short distance away, when the incident occurred, according to Israeli media reports.

A deodorant canister apparently exploded inside the burning bin, sending a burning tin can flying into the boy’s abdomen. He was severely injured by the intense heat and flames.

Emergency responders rushed Eliyahu to Hadassah Ein Kerem Medical Center in Jerusalem while performing resuscitation efforts. He suffered severe burns and multiple traumatic injuries, but doctors were unable to save his life.

Eliyahu was the eighth of 10 children in the family of Rabbi Chaim Azriel, who lives in Beitar Illit.

According to the reports, Eliyahu’s brother ran home to alert their mother, but the ambulance had already taken the boy to the hospital. A Hatzalah volunteer who was in the area helped bring his mother to the hospital.

Following arrangements by ZAKA, Eliyahu was released for burial. His funeral was scheduled for Wednesday night at the Sephardic funeral hall at Har Hamenuchot Cemetery in Jerusalem.

The circumstances surrounding the fire and explosion were not detailed further in the initial reports.
