Trump Administration Investigating Ilhan Omar in Effort to Revoke Citizenship, WSJ Reports
WASHINGTON (VINnews) — The Trump administration is investigating Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., in an effort to build a case to revoke her U.S. citizenship and potentially deport her, The Wall Street Journal reported Wednesday night.
The investigation focuses on whether Omar or her late father misrepresented her age on immigration documents decades ago, potentially allowing her to obtain citizenship automatically through her father’s naturalization. Omar became a U.S. citizen in 2000 after arriving from Somalia with her family in 1995.
Federal agents searched Omar’s Washington home Monday, seizing her cellphone, passport, notebooks and computers, according to the Journal. Authorities have also issued more than a dozen subpoenas, including to relatives, as a Minnesota grand jury examines the family’s immigration records.
Omar has denied committing immigration fraud. Her office accused President Donald Trump of targeting her, saying there was no basis for the investigation.
Federal officials reportedly examined a similar allegation during the Biden administration but did not pursue it because of insufficient evidence.
Revoking citizenship is a legally demanding process. The Justice Department must bring a case in federal court and prove that a person materially misrepresented information to obtain naturalization. Former Justice Department immigration official Leon Fresco told the Journal that prosecutors would face a difficult legal path.
The investigation comes weeks before the November midterm elections, in which Omar is seeking reelection. Trump has repeatedly criticized the congresswoman and Somali immigrants, making Omar a frequent target of his political attacks.
The Journal reported that the inquiry is part of the administration’s broader effort to denaturalize U.S. citizens, with officials pursuing more than 200 lawsuits seeking to revoke citizenship.
