Herzog Speaks in Baku: Iran, Turkey and PA Walk Out, Qatar’s Emir Stays Put
Israeli President Isaac Herzog addressed an international summit in Baku, Azerbaijan, on Thursday morning, prompting a walkout by several delegations as soon as he took the podium.
Representatives of Iran, Turkey, Kuwait, Pakistan and the Palestinian Authority rose and left the hall the moment Herzog began speaking.
One notable leader remained seated. Qatar’s Emir, who is attending the gathering, stayed in the room and listened to the Israeli president’s address from start to finish.
Herzog, who is in the Azerbaijani capital for the conference alongside heads of state from around the world, used his speech to stress Israel’s desire for regional cooperation while drawing a firm line on terrorism and boycotts.
“Israel strives and works to deepen cooperation and to expand our circle of peace. But it is important to be clear: peace cannot exist alongside terror, and cooperation cannot flourish alongside boycotts,” Herzog said.
He added: “Every sovereign state that is a member of this framework has the right to live in freedom and peace, without its very existence being subject to constant threat.”
