New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill says the prospect of soldiers being ordered to carry out a public firing-squad execution of Fort Hood shooter Nidal Hasan “keeps me up at night,” warning of the lasting impact on the service members involved.

In a statement criticizing the Trump administration’s plan, Sherrill said Hasan “killed 13 innocent soldiers and deserves to be brought to justice,” but argued that a televised execution would be “contrary to the values that this nation stands for and that I took oaths to protect.”

“One aspect of this in particular keeps me up at night: the horror of detailing soldiers to be in the firing squad,” she said. “Most veterans like myself are unfamiliar with firing squads because our military hasn’t used one in over 80 years.”

Sherrill said she thinks about her own children serving in the military and a young service member being assigned to a firing squad despite moral objections or personal opposition.

“Just about anyone who has served in combat can tell you about the toll it takes. This is different and worse: firing on someone for the public spectacle of it,” she said.

The governor also criticized Congress for not intervening, saying it was “hard to understand how Congress has not called an emergency session to block it.”

“It infuriates me to think of all the Members of Congress who have thanked me for my service on Veterans Day, but have said nothing about this and refuse to hold Trump and Hegseth accountable,” Sherrill said.

She accused President Donald Trump and Pete Hegseth of putting a public display ahead of the welfare of military personnel.

“I imagine the young person getting detailed to the firing squad and doing their duty, following their orders. And I think of the lasting impact that will have on them,” she said. “I just wish the two men in charge of our military cared half as much about the men and women who serve as they do about themselves.”
