IDF Engineers Destroy 1.5-Kilometer Hamas Tunnel That Crossed Into Israeli-Held Gaza

Oct 15, 2026·2 min read

JERUSALEM (VINnews) — Israeli combat engineers recently demolished a roughly 1.5-kilometer (about 0.9-mile) underground tunnel belonging to Hamas that crossed into the portion of the Gaza Strip held by Israeli forces, the Israel Defense Forces said.

The tunnel, located in the southern Gaza Strip, contained several rooms intended for use by Hamas operatives, according to the military. It passed beneath the Yellow Line, the demarcation line established under the October 2025 ceasefire arrangement that separates areas under Israeli military control from those outside it.

Troops from the Southern Brigade, operating under the engineering unit of the Gaza Division (143rd Division) and Southern Command, carried out the operation together with the elite Yahalom combat engineering unit. The forces sealed and blew up the passage as part of ongoing efforts to clear terrorist infrastructure from the Israeli-held side of the line, the IDF said.

The military stated that its troops remain deployed in the area in accordance with the ceasefire agreement and will continue to act against immediate threats.

The Yellow Line was drawn as part of the U.S.-brokered framework that ended major fighting. It places roughly half of the Gaza Strip — primarily eastern and border areas — under Israeli control while confining the rest to the west. Israeli forces have repeatedly reported finding and destroying tunnel networks, weapons caches and other infrastructure on their side of the line since the ceasefire took effect.

Yahalom specializes in complex engineering and underground warfare missions. The IDF has released video footage of the sealed tunnel on its official channels.

This operation is one of multiple similar demolitions announced in recent weeks as Israeli forces continue systematic efforts to dismantle remaining Hamas tunnel infrastructure east of the Yellow Line.
