New Free App Helps Chabad Families Track Maaser and Tzedakah
by CrownHeights.info
A new, free app is offering individuals and families in the Chabad-Lubavitch community a practical way to organize their maaser and tzedakah giving, helping users keep track of their charitable contributions and see how much remains to be given.
Called My Maaser, the app was developed by Nehora Apps, a small studio based in Jerusalem and run by a Chabad family. Originally created for the developers’ own use, the app grew out of a desire to make tracking maaser simpler and more manageable. After others expressed interest, the developers made it available to the public at no cost. The app is now available in English, making it accessible to a wider audience.
Maaser, commonly understood as setting aside a portion of one’s income for tzedakah, is an important practice in Jewish life. For many families, keeping accurate records of income and charitable donations can become complicated, particularly when contributions are made throughout the year to multiple organizations, mosdos and individuals.
My Maaser is designed to simplify that process. Users can enter their income and tzedakah contributions, allowing the app to display how much they have given and how much remains toward their maaser goal. Rather than relying on handwritten notes, spreadsheets or memory, users can maintain an ongoing record of their giving in one place.
The app also includes a separate tracker for annual charitable pledges. As users record donations, the pledge tracker updates automatically, helping them monitor their progress toward commitments made to institutions and organizations.
Another feature allows a husband and wife to track their giving together as one household, providing a shared picture of the family’s contributions and remaining balance. The developers say the information remains private.
My Maaser is available for iPhone and Android devices, as well as through a web browser, giving users several ways to access the tracker.
The developers emphasize that the app is intended as a straightforward organizational tool rather than a substitute for halachic guidance. Questions about which income is subject to maaser, which contributions qualify, and how particular circumstances should be handled should be addressed with a qualified rav.
For families looking to bring greater clarity and organization to their tzedakah records, My Maaser offers a simple, free tool developed with the needs of its own Jewish community in mind.
